Recently, my student (who graduated from Notre Dame about 40 years ago) wrote in her journal about the things she saw looking out of the train window. She saw people walking their dogs, driving their cars and hanging laundry. She thought about the trains running on time and the people chatting to their acquaintances on the train about everyday things. She wrote how she feels lucky because we live in a place where life is very smooth. We know we can easily catch the train, care for our pets and see our friends. In light of what has happened in Tohoku and what is happening in countries around the world, I feel very thankful for what I have living here in Kyoto . I don’t want to forget that.
