REALIA

           Looking back on years when I was a student , I remember making fruit salad and cooking macaroni alphabet soup in our English class! My teacher would also let us wear different costumes and play pretend.   She would use real objects for almost any English lesson.   For weather and role-plays – clothes; for adjectives and hobbies - family pictures; for locations and travel – maps and travel brochures; for prepositions – stuffed  animals and plastic toys; for transportations -tickets, timetables and coins; etcetera.   These teaching props that are called realia today made my language learning of yesteryears fun and memorable.

           Remembering the benefits I obtained from learning English vocabulary with real things, I also try to teach new words with realia as much as possible.    The class becomes more engaged and it elicits higher responses and participation in role play even by the most introverted students.    It can be a bit troublesome to gather authentic objects for a lesson but it’s worth the pain.   Plus when that i nteractive multimedia screen in the classroom breaks down realia is the best back up!

          I believe realia enhances the learning process because it gives the students a hands-on experience.   They can use their five senses: to see, to touch, to smell, to hear and/or to feel and even to taste the authentic objects and that is why the probability of remembering the words is much higher after experiencing them. As the ageless adage goes “ Experience is the best teacher .”

REALIA 　実物を使った教材

私が学生だったころを振り返ってみると、英語の時間にフルーツサラダとアルファベット型のスープを作ったことが思い出されます。

先生が用意してくれた衣装で、様々なごっこ遊びもしました。英語の時間はほとんどいつも実物の教材を使った授業でした。天気や実際の場面を想定したごっこ遊びをする時は衣服を、形容詞や趣味を勉強する時は家族の写真を、場所や旅行には地図やパンフレットを、前置詞はぬいぐるみとおもちゃ、そして交通を扱った授業では、切符、時刻表、コインを使いました。このように、実際身の回りにあるものを使った教材を、 REALIA といいます。私が REALIA を使って英語を学んだのはもう何年も前の事ですが、いまでも楽しい記憶として残っています。

このように自分が楽しく言語を学んだ経験を少しでも活かすために、できるだけ普段から REALIA を用いた授業を心がけています。 REALIA を使うことで、クラス全体の興味、関心が高まり、内気な子どもでも参加してみたいと思わせることができます。

授業の単元によっては、実物を揃えることが難しい場合もありますが、苦労してでも集めるだけの価値はあります。デジタルコンテンツが使えない時は、 REALIA がどれだけ役に立つことでしょう。

REALIA を用いた授業では、実物に触れることにより、子どもたちの興味関心を最大限に引き出すことができ、これが言語習得を促進させる早道だと私は自らの経験から確信しています。

古いことわざに、「経験は最良の教師である」と言われているように、実際に、五感（見て、聞いて、嗅いで、触って、味わう）を使って学んだ言葉というのはいつまでも記憶に残るものだからです。
