5月11日の朝の校内テレビ放送では、母の日について英語でお話がありました。その内容をご紹介します。

History and Origin of Mother's Day

Good morning. This coming Sunday, May 13th we celebrate Mother's Day, a very special day. Have you ever wondered--how did Mother's Day begin? Who started it? And why is it always on the second Sunday in May? To find out we need to step back in time.

Mother's Day is very, very old and goes back to the times of ancient Greece. Early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Later on a religious order made the holiday to include all mothers around the world and named the holiday Mothering Sunday.

In 1872 a woman named Julia Ward Howe organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace. It was celebrated in a few places, but didn't really catch on until 1907, when Anna Jarvis began a campaign for national Mother's Day holiday. She used white carnations to celebrate Mother's Day, as that was her own mother's favorite flower. Then, American President Woodrow Wilson, officially signed and proclaimed the second Sunday in May to be Mother's Day.

Many countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Belgium and Japan all celebrate on the second Sunday of May. All over the world mothers are very special.

「わかる部分だけでも聞き取れればそれでいいのです」という校長先生のお話もあり、子ども達はそれぞれのレベルに応じて、わかる部分から話全体を大まかに理解したようでした。

本校の英語の授業は、外国人と日本人の先生のTeam Teachingで、
授業のほとんどを英語で行っています。英語の授業風景をご紹介します。

 

4年生の授業では、イタリア語、フランス語、スペイン語でのあいさつも取り入れて授業が始まりました。数々の言語を自由に操る先生に驚きながらも、子ども達も各国語であいさつを返します。その後は、先生について、元気よく英語の発音練習が始まりました。すっかり英語のリズムに乗って、楽しそうに答えている子ども達の様子です。

 

4月に行われた2年生のイースターパーティーの様子です。英語でのお祈りから始まり、歌あり、ゲームあり、エッグハント (Easter Egg Hunt) ありの1時間でした。英語での指示にもすんなりと従っている姿から、入学してから1年間での成長ぶりがうかがえます。


本校では54年前の創立以来英語の授業を行っていますが、子ども達が国際的な視野をはぐくむ一助になればと願っています。
