7月1日の朝の校内テレビ放送では、アメリカの独立記念日について英語でお話がありました。その内容をご紹介します。

The 4th of July

  On the 4th of July America celebrates Independence Day.  This holiday celebrates the creation of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and America's separation from England.  It was written by Thomas Jefferson. After declaring independence America then created and wrote the United States Constitution.  This 4-page document is the law that guides America's government.  When America first separated from England it had no official flag.  A flag called the Grand Union Flag was used by George Washington, the first American president.  The first official flag of the United States showed 13 red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue field in honor of the original 13 colonies that would become America.  Today's American flag looks the same but now has 50 stars on a blue field.  Each star represents one state in America.

  So, on the 4th of July America celebrates her birthday.

7月4日はアメリカ合衆国の独立記念日（どくりつきねんび）という祝日です。1776年7月4日に、アメリカがイギリスから分かれて、独立を宣言したことを記念しています。独立宣言書はトーマス・ジェファーソンという人が作りました。アメリカは独立を宣言した後、アメリカの憲法を作りました。4ページにわたる文書で、アメリカの政治について書いた法律です。アメリカはイギリスから分かれて独立した時、まだ国旗がありませんでした。初代大統領のジョージ・ワシントンは、（イギリスの旗に似ている）「グランド・ユニオン・フラッグ」という旗を使っていました。その後、初めてアメリカの国旗が決まりました。それは、13本の紅白のしまもようと青い部分には13の星がある旗でした。ヨーロッパから来た人が住みついた13の地域（入植地）からアメリカ合衆国が始まったことを表しています。 現在のアメリカの国旗もこれによく似ていますが、星の数が50に増えています。それぞれの星はアメリカの50の州を表しています。

7月4日の独立記念日とは、アメリカの誕生日なのです。
